Freddie and Barnaby
June 23, 2007![]()
Freddie and Barnaby(miniature donkey geldings) were rescued by a friend of ours. Do to a loss in her family she asked us to take these two on and nurse them back to health. We went and picked them up on June 21, 2007. Our vet arrived the next day to assess their needs and to help with introduction of food. Chances Rescue also helped with introduction to food. They will be given all the grass hay they want 24 hours a day. They have also been started on 2 cups of beet pulp with no molassess twice day. To this we are adding in vitamins and 1/2 cup of senior feed. Over time we will gradually increase the grain rations. They are approx 100lbs underweight. There hooves haven't been trimmed in many years. The farrier is coming Monday to start this task. Here are pictures of the boys as they arrived home. We will conintue to update this page as the boys heal. Please keep them in your prayers and thoughts as this process will be a long one for them.
June 26, 2007Barnaby had his hoofs trimmed today for the first time in years. We gave Calmex about 1 hour prior. He behaved fairly well. Still pretty spunky for his overall condition. Took 2 1/2 hours from Start to Finish for our Farrier, Nelson Preston. The removed hoofs weighted 1lb 12 oz. He is walking pretty good. Does have a limp in the hoof that was balled up. Will include before and after photo's below. Freddie will get his done on Saturday. The Equine Dentist, "Dr. Chenoweth from the Quad Cities will be here on July 17, 2007 for both boys. Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. ![]() ![]() **Front Hooves**![]() ![]() **Back Hooves**![]() ![]() Aug 8, 2007Sept 19, 2007We want to put a huge THANK YOU out to Jeremy and Shawn for their compassion and humanity to these boys. They are a super team and we couldn't have asked for more. They will be back in 2 months to check the boys again and expect to see some decent weight gain by then. ![]() Jeremy and Shawn with Fred ![]() March 4, 2008It is with great sadness that we have to share that Barney didn't make it through winter. With all the vet care, dental care, farrier care, and tender loving care he just couldn't overcome the years of neglect. He did not seem able to gain weight. One morning we went out and he was up looking around. From the time it took us to go the barn for his grain and hay he had fallen and was unable to get up. We are guessing a stroke. With very much heartache we decided to let Barney cross over the rainbow bridge. He is finally at peace and running free from any pain. As for Fred, we worried how he would go on without his best friend. We introduced Tinkerbell to him and they have been together ever since. He has bonded to her. Fred has gained very good amounts of weight. He is still lame and will continue to suffer from the twisted legs caused my his hooves not being trimmed. He is as comfortable as we are able to make him and seems happy. June 6, 2008It is again with great sadness that we share that Fred lost his fight for recovery. He had struggled for the last 5 days with lameness in the back right hoove. Then we noticed him getting sores on his leg. We called the vet immediately. He had some how broken is leg. We are guessing maybe from simple getting up as he legs were still so twisted. To us this is true testament to how cruel neglect can be on an animal. No matter what we tried to do, we could not erase the years of neglect these boys suffered. The effects of long term starvation still were evident in the make up of these boys. Fred is now at peace with Barney. I pray they are both running free and that god has enveloped them into his heavenly home. animated graphics were obtained via free websites, if they are copyrighted please let me know and they will be removed immediately site design & graphics by Mythical Danes Designs |
